His excavations were more scientific than theirs (but, of course, not up to current standards). Two years later, Nordenskiold's monumental work, The Cliff Dwellers of the Mesa Verde, was published, forever solidifying his place in archaeology and in the park's history. The book was the first extensive examination and photographic record of Mesa Verde prehistory and until 1964 was the only description of the Wetherill Mesa ruins. The formal plaza in the center of the site is larger than most villages and has some features not often found in other Mesa Verde archeological sites. For instance, the benches, vaults, and a raised firebox may indicate that this large open space was a dance plaza or great kiva, similar to Fire Temple on Chapin Mesa. Mesa Verde National Park is in the South-West of Colorado, in Montezuma county, and covers a surface of about 211 square kilometres. Over the whole land there are scattered villages built by ancient people called Anasazi and found after their abandonment by the Navajo people in XVI century.

In 1891, Swedish scientist Gustaf Nordenskiold studied, explored, and photographed many of Mesa Verde’s cliff dwellings. Considered by many to be the first true archeologist at Mesa Verde, his book, The Cliff Dwellers of the Mesa Verde, was the first extensive record of its cliff dwellings. Cultural History: In 1891, 23-year old Swedish scientist Gustaf Nordenskiold visited Mesa Verde. Using painstaking field methods for his time, he excavated many sites, including this one.
